So you know...

Fri Nov 20, 2009, 1:24 PM
I'm, like, never on here. And I know I don't really have any watchers that aren't already on ff.net, so it doesn't matter, but hell, it's fun to pop up and do a meme or poem once and a while, so today I shall do the former. it is one I wrote myself

FANFIC READER'S MEME

1. So you like to read fanfiction, do you? What got you into that?
At this point I think I remember it being something about Naruto and wondering what it would be like in a high school setting. That was ages ago. Now I both read and write the crap.

2. Well, if you read a lot of fanfiction, you probably know of the famous Fanfiction.net! Got an account there?
Yes I do. "Soul Stealing Kodak." No stories yet, though.

3. If your answer to the previous question was yes, what were your sentiments upon discovering the site's existence?
Something like this: OH MY GOD A COMMUNITY DEDICATED TO THIRTEEN YEAR OLDS WITH FANTASIES ABOUT JACK SPARROW! THE WORLD IS ENDI- Oh wait there's a Zelda category? Fuck yes!

4. What was the first fanfic you ever read? Did you like it? What was it about?
Sadly, it no longer exists because the author took it down after discontinuing it, but it was called Soul: Tainted and it was a Naruto AU about trained assassins going undercover. The amazing TheFinalCountdown known as ~SouthpawSister here on DA, was the writer. I did indeed like it very much. Even though South was only starting out as a writer, she always put so much work and thought into things. Talking with her I've discovered that she plans to rewrite it, too! Woot! But not until after she finishes one of her current fics; so it will be awhile.

5. What are your favorite types of stories? That is to say...genre.
I like an awful lot of genres. Adventure, romance, tragedy or western, it doesn't matter as long as I can enjoy it. I also like stories that challenge the norm of mary-sue fan inserts by using, instead, believable, weak characters and AU's that challenge the standard of simple high school environment. In other words, creativity at its finest is enough for me.

6. What about your favorite fanfic authors? Who are they?
The very same TheFinalCountdown who wrote Soul: Tainted so long ago, as well as several popular mainstream authors on ff.net. I suppose I also like my own writing, even if it lacks some things like SKILL. XD

7. In the world of fanfiction, it's nigh impossible to avoid seeing OC's at some point. What is your opinion about them?
OC's? I think they're alright, but you have to be careful with them. Remember, there's a very fine line between believable and OMG SUE.

8. Have you run across any OC's you particularly liked?
From another of Tfc's fanfics, Stargazing, I like Lance Lightfoot. He is a weak, timid character who has a long way to go before he can live up to the high pirate standard. But he also surprises people with his wide array of knowledge and occasional outburst of blunt honesty. He's 'a wimp, but not weak'.

9. Any you disliked?
Just a few Mary Sues I was unable to foresee and avoid here and there.

10. So you might even have garnered inspiration from a fanfic for your own, right? If so, what kind? What fanfic inspired you?
The first fanfic to ever really inspire me was Sensei an AU Zelda fic, with a teacher/student romance between Link and Zelda. It was something I'd never seen before that challenged conventional stories and traditional opinions about how relationships could be. Unfortunately I haven't seen many other well written fics like it. Really it inspired me to think outside the box.

11. So are you friends with a lot of fanfic writers?
Yep! Tfc/:devSouthpawSister is one, and there is also the sibling dynamic duo, Pyro and Gogglehead. They're a brother and sister, with the sister being a sort of mentor who partners with her student. They haven't posted a fic yet, but we chat now and again.

12. Any fanfic ideas you find cliche?
Vampires. Vampires are cliche. Werewolves are cliched. YAOI and YURI are cliche. A lot of things are cliche.

13. Just because something is cliche doesn't mean it's bad though, right? What's one cliche you find interesting enough to keep searching for and reading?
Time travel fics!

14. Of course, we can't forget the aged old cliche of the crossover fic. What's one crossover you've read?
An OoT/Naruto crossover, also by Tfc, called DemonSong. It's not only unconventional, it's pretty and melodically written.

15. A crossover you haven't seen but would like to?
Hm, a Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones/Wind Waker crossover.

16. What's one fanfiction concept that bugs you?
I know there's the opportunity of artistic license to account for, but it always bugs me when someone slashes two canonically straight characters. In other words things like NaruSasu. To each his own, but I don't even bother reading them.

17. What's one concept you think could be really good, but never seem to find well written samples of?
Next Gen fics. You find them everywhere, but none of them are ever very good. I may write one myself just to try and change that, but I'm not all that spectacular either.

18. Since we still haven't covered it, what categories of fanfics do you tend to read?
Mostly Naruto and Zelda. But I also like Earthbound and Harvest Moon.

19. Everyone has a guilty pleasure. Like yaoi or crack pairings. What's yours?
SasuIno, a crack pairing from the Naruto fandom. I'm smart enough to know it's a stupid, crazy idea that will never happen. But so many of the fics are so damn FUNNY that I can't resist. Crack pairings, if well written, are alright to read, especially humorous ones. That's what crack is for!

20. How about underappreciated characters? What's one you like?
LUIGI! WHY ISN'T HIS FANBASE BIGGER WHHHHHYYYYYYYY

21. Feel free to tag someone!
:iconsouthpawsister: of course! Do it now, TFC!
